6th Grade Language Arts Syllabus

Grade Weights:

Summative Assessments 70%

Formative Assessments 30%

Areas of study:

Reading:​ Nonfiction and fiction, paired passages, novel study. Important concepts: theme, tone, inference, point of view, analysis of figurative language and author’s purpose. Vocabulary:​ Root words, vocabulary in context, self-collected vocabulary.

Writing:​ Narrative (stories), argument, and informational writing based on text.

​

Language:​ ​Pronouns (personal, subject/object, intensive, indefinite). Punctuation, especially comma usage. Non-negotiables: proper use of capital letters, end marks, basic spelling, indents, complete sentences. Spelling instruction will focus on commonly misspelled words.

Google Classroom:

We will consistently be using google classroom throughout the year for notes, assessments, collaboration, extension, and more. Please make it a point to check in with your child’s google classroom on a weekly basis for any updates.​

Daily Expectations:​

  • Students should come to class prepared with all necessary supplies, including their student planners. This is an important expectation as we help students navigate and strengthen their organizational skills.

  • Your role as parents: One of the most common questions we hear each year is, “How can I help my child improve in Language Arts?” My advice: READ with your child. Find reading materials that are engaging to his or her interests. Ask questions about what your child reads! Move beyond, “Did you like it?” to “Why did you like it? Why did that happen? Tell me more. What did you learn?
